The Yellowknife Community Foundation was very pleased to participate in the official opening of BETTY House today.
In January 2011 (“Coalition Receives Significant Contribution”), the Yellowknife Community Foundation became one of the first contributors to BETTY House when it presented a cheque for $50,000 to the Homelessness Coalition to assist with project planning.
The Yellowknife Homelessness Coalition sponsored the development of BETTY House (an acronym for Better Environment To Transition in Yellowknife). The YWCA of Yellowknife will operate the transition home for women and women with families.
Lynn Brooks, a long-term Yellowknife resident and advocate for women and other social issues was recognized at the ceremony by having the building renamed in her honour.
In existence since 1993, the Yellowknife Community Foundation is the leading philanthropic organization in Yellowknife. A registered charity, the Foundation was formed in 1993 to provide residents (and former residents) with a means of supporting projects in our community for the enduring future. The Foundation is not singularly dedicated to any specific area of support. It embodies a simple concept – that people working together can make a difference. Donations are placed in a capital fund. The money, invested over time, will grow and will continue to have an impact long after the original gift is made. Donations to the Foundation are eligible deductions for income tax purposes.
